About Newcomb Sand and Soil
Dunoon’s Newcomb Sand and Soil has its origins at Fyansford, Geelong in 1963 when Doug and Joy Dunoon first stored and stockpiled sand and soil for the Geelong industrial and residential markets.
Materials were sourced locally, including from the Degoldi dairy farm sandpit located on the Barwon River at Fyansford.
In 1973 with five children in tow they moved this business to Wattlepark ave in Moolap, and in 1976 to the current site at 295 Bellarine Hwy. Moolap, Geelong. On this site they developed Geelong’s first intended retail and wholesale garden supplies that was also to be the residence for the family.
Back in these days the NSS fleet consisted of a 7 yard D series Ford and a 10 yard C1800 International. Big trucks for this era! The loaders were powered by Ford either a Fordson super major or the articulated scoopmobile.
Today the tipper fleet is powered by numerous Volvo, Isuzu and Toyota vehicles, ranging from one to forty tonne payloads.
NSS operate from their own five sandpit sites in the Geelong region, and are complemented by a recycling and blending facility at Point Henry along with 2 Retail depots in Newcomb & Torquay
Turf sand is one of the major products produced today for golf courses, sports grounds and race tracks.
Product prepared in Geelong currently is delivered throughout Victoria and on occasions has been delivered interstate.
Equipment used on these site’s, are available for general hire and contract work which includes front end loaders, excavators, dump trucks, wide load floats, water carts, bobcats, scrapers, graders, screening and washing plants.
NSS today employ over 30 employees and contractors. All staff undergo extensive on-site training to ensure their level of competence is of a high standard and that they are capable to complete their allocated task on client sites.
OH&S compliance along with employee and client safety is the number one item on all agendas in this business. Our common sense golden rule reflects this where all staff are aware that “if we can’t do it safely we don’t do it”.
Today the management team is headed by Chris, Joanne and David, but we do hope in the not too distant future, key long-term employees will gradually take on this responsibility.
