Newcomb Sand and Soil Supplies digs deep with Isuzu

Family-owned and operated business, Newcomb Sand and Soil Supplies, recently acquired a new Isuzu tipper.

The NQR 87-190 AMT Tipper, with 8,700 kg gross vehicle mass (GVM) and 12,200 kg gross combination mass (GCM), is part of Isuzu’s pre-bodied Ready-to-Work range.

The new unit enhances NSS’ fleet of 11 Isuzu trucks, ranging from light-duty NLR 275 (NLR 55-150) units to medium-duty FVR 950 (FVR 165-300) tippers.

According to Newcomb Sand and Soil Supplies Managing Director, David Dunoon, the current COVID-19 climate has engendered a 25 per cent increase in demand for the company’s products and services.

“We’re in quite a fortunate position at present,” said Dunoon. “It seems that with everyone at home they’ve decided to begin those gardening projects they’ve always dreamed about. Right now, we’re the busiest we’ve been in recent memory.”

Newcomb Sand and Soil Supplies has three sites – Moolap, Point Henry and Torquay – enabling deliveries throughout the Geelong coastal region, as well as Bellarine and Surf Coast regions, and all the way into Melbourne.

Some of the business’s accomplishments, according to Isuzu, include delivering 3,000 tonnes of turf soil to Geelong Racecourse, 7,000 tonnes of turf sand to the Point Lonsdale golf club, and a 13,000 tonnes of turf sand to Mossfiel Reserve in Hoppers Crossing.

The new NQR 87-190 AMT Tipper has been put straight to work helping Newcomb Sand and Soil Supplies manage upwards of 80 deliveries per day of sand and soil.

According to Dunoon, tight timelines are not the only challenge; hard-to-access sites with minuscule driveways and limited access points, especially in modern day suburbia, can indeed prove testing.

“Houses are not getting any larger, they’re getting smaller, he said. “For many driveways, you’d be lucky if you could get two cars up them. So most of the time, we’ve got to go off-road and squeeze through small gaps in fences to get material to where contractors need it. We’ve found that the NQR AMT Tipper works perfectly in such situations, being compact and with great manoeuvrability, but without compromising on strength and payload capacity.”

Dunoon said the NQR’s smooth two-pedal automated manual transmission (AMT), combined with 140kW at 2,600rpm and 513Nm between 1,600 and 2,600rpm, makes for easy driving for the Newcomb crew.

Other comfort and safety features include driver’s suspension seat, power-assisted recirculating ball steering, Isuzu Electronic Stability Control (IESC), cruise control and cornering lamps.
